Kurt from Community College

I’m gonna tell you a story that I’m gonna remember for my whole life, and which you might remember for the whole of yours as well. I’m 23 now and work as a waitress in a famous restaurant in New York, but the story I’m about to tell happened in a small town when I was 20 years old and attending the local community college.

Ever since I was young I had a crush on a boy named Kurt Connors. In fact, I think one of the reasons I started going to the college was because Kurt was attending that semester as well. We didn’t go to the same class, but I saw him everyday in the halls. He was a real ‘lady-killer’ and every girl in the college had a thing for him. I was so jealous of the girls he walked around with, and there were plenty of those! I wanted Kurt for myself, even if it was just once.

Kurt and I were only acquaintances and had never talked before, so it didn’t seem like this had a real good chance of happening. We didn’t even hang out in the same circles, although our town was small and we probably should have; looking back on it now I know that Kurt and I had a lot in common. I guess my little schoolgirl crush precluded me from talking to him. That’s why I’d never been able to come close to him and expose my feelings. That is until our college organized a road trip.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, and no, this wasn’t one of those road trips! My God!

The college arranged it so those with the highest scores in the math classes would have a chance to compete against the other community colleges in the state. The event was being held in Twin Falls, just a 2-hour drive away. Somehow my scores were high enough, and I was offered a spot. What the hell? I thought, and soon found myself on the bus with several other high scorers, Kurt being one of them, much to my delight!

I remember sitting on the bus by myself when he came on board. I so hoped that he’d sit next to me, since no one else had. At the time I wasn’t very confident, and I was also a little on the heavier side. It wasn’t much, (God not compared to what people think today!) but it was still enough that most of the boys didn’t want to seem ‘uncool’ being caught with me. It meant I spent a lot of time alone.

Kurt started walking down the bus and I thought he’d sit with me for sure, but at the last second he slid into a spot next to Molly Perkins, one of the old cheerleaders from high school. God I hated her! I sat back and watched the scenery go by for the next two hours as we made our way to the competition.

We reached Twin Falls after dark and everyone got checked into the hotel.
